Stacey At the Chat

Stacey at the Chat

The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Gameville team today;
The score stood four to two with three cycles more to play.
And then when Peter balked at first, and Eric did the same,
A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
They thought if only Stacey could but get a whack at that—
We’d put up even money now with Stacey at the chat.

There was stress in Stacey’s manner as she stepped into her place;
There was pride in Stacey’s bearing but a grim look on her face.
And when, responding to jeers and cheers, she lightly doffed her hat,
No stranger in the crowd could doubt ’twas Stacey at the chat.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
Sgt. Pepper's Band is playing there, and Marley's heart is light,
And somewhere souls are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Gameville — manic Stacey has struck out.
